Showcase #1 @ 4pm with Grace Clark and Yohaan Gandevia

so·journ /ˈsōjərn/ noun a temporary stay.

Our featured emerging artists are by definition sojourners. Their development as young musicians dictates that they stay in one place long enough to collect experience and tools to then propel them into the next of their endeavours.

They are at a pivitol place in their lives and musical studies - after the 2020/21 year of studies taking place entirely online, each of them has persevered and flourished through this current year of in-person collaboration and guidance at Selkirk College in the Contemporary Music and Technology Program.

In this particular spring season, The word "emerging" holds an even weightier significance as we all begin to take bolder steps back into connection with each other. The Capitol Theatre invites you to this celebration of young artistic excellence and resilience.

Grace Clark: Born and raised in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and now living in Nelson, BC, Métis artist Grace Clark has had a passion for music since the age of 3, when she began playing piano. At age 7, Grace picked up the fiddle and quickly immersed herself in the northern performing arts community playing at various festivals and hosting local open mic nights in Yellowknife. She taught herself guitar in high school, and has since blossomed into the singer & songwriter we know today. Grace’s sweet melodies and passionate lyrics build a delicate but enticing world, reflecting on love and loss, and themes that you will want to dive right into. Grace draws inspiration from influences such as Taylor Swift, Lennon Stella, Tash Sultana, and Etta James. With hints of blues in her vocals, she creates a dynamic Indie Pop sound with an emotional edge. At just 21 years old, Grace has released her first single ‘Untouchable’ in June of 2020, followed by a live EP in June of 2021. Grace’s voice is what drives her the most, and you will surely see this growing artist paving her own path in the music industry.

Yohaan Gandevia: Yohaan Gandevia is a Jazz pianist who has been pursuing music as a student and now emerging artist for the past 10 years. Initially starting with performing recitals in Classical music in India and receiving young talent and young artist of the year awards, he stumbled upon a video of an Italian pianist playing a famous jazz standard which sparked his interest into the Jazz genre. Yohaan began his Jazz studies by watching videos online through YouTube until he decided to take things further and pursue studies at the Bill Evans Piano Academy in Paris where he completed 2 years of intensive Jazz piano studies. He is now residing in Nelson BC where he is continuing his studies at Selkirk College with David Restivo.
