IMPULSO

When Rocío Molina dances, one cannot help but stare in astonishment and think: “this young woman is reinventing Flamenco”.

The venues she picks for her performances are unusual, ranging from prisons to museums. They are places where she has room to improvise and push the boundaries of her choreography as far as they can go.

Over recent years, the young spanish dancer and choreographer Rocio Molina has become the new shining star of Flamenco and modern dance, using public improvisations called impulsos to create choreographies. After having won the heart of both classical and new audiences, she’s now facing the biggest challenge of her career: the creation of a new show at the Chaillot National Theatre in Paris, highlight of their 2016/2017 season.

In the months leading up to the debut of her new show Impulso in Paris, she and her musicians are deep in a demanding creative process. Despite incorporating improvisation, modern dance and avant-garde experimentation with objects, paint and musical instruments into her pieces, Molina does not ignore Flamenco’s history.

“She manipulates rhythm like dough”, constantly seeking “the tension, the unknown, the self-discovery”.
